Ok, I've seen the argument that somehow being able to do this might allow piracy to happen more easily, which doesn't make any sense when buying the same game from the e-shop digitally, will install the game to MicroSD.. which I can then remove from my Switch and stick into my PC. (Just saying, that argument is not valid)
For anyone who doesn't get my point of view, this is my issue. As an example a week ago I flew to Florida for work and a little vacation and was happy to be able to try out my handy portable Nintendo Switch. The day I left I only had Breath of the Wild (physical copy), and thought about buying Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as well. While I like physical copies, there is already WAY too many pieces for the Switch. You have the Switch itself, the joy cons, power cable, portable USB to Type C charging cable, the dock, the controller hub for the joy cons, and I'm supposed to also drag around tiny cartridges? Come on, if I could just install Breath of the Wild on my Micro SD card then I don't have to worry about the cartridges. I ended up buying Mario Kart 8 digitally, as well as Minecraft digitally and it's very nice to not have to worry about their cartridges.
Honestly I guess it's my own fault as I should have figured this out before buying Breath of the Wild with my Switch. I'm just irritated that if I want it installed on my SD Card that I will need to buy it again, and I probably will. Anyone else think this is crazy? If I can buy it and download it straight to my Micro SD, why can't I install the cartridge to Micro SD?
Cartridge dumps; Extracting private data from games like models (data mining) Backing up saves and transferring them to another Switch; Editing saves 'Cheating' in games by modifying RAM values; And a lot more that they haven't disclosed publicly. You can find most of them on Twitter, they post lots of interesting things about this.
EDIT: I guess that is one argument I didn't see in the beginning. Installing from cartridge allows people to install a game and give the cartridge to a friend who could do the same endlessly, or you could install the game and sell it and still have the game. Ok this is making more sense now lol.
- Switch game downloads can’t be shared across multiple systems Purchases can apparently only be on one system at a time. No need to even install the game off of the tiny cartridge.
- We don't know if any of the games shown for Switch support 8-player download play, but at least we now know the Switch has that feature. Can you imagine 8-player Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with just one cartridge?
When the Switch first launched, there were less than a dozen titles available for sale. But, as time goes by, and as game makers realize the popularity of Nintendo's hybrid mobile console, more and more titles are being added to the list all of the time.
